QUESTION:
I have been invited to a Hifdh Jalsa. However, the Madrassah which is hosting the Jalsa appears frequently on videos and YouTube, as well as attending Quraan events which are live-streamed via video. This Hifdh Jalsa will not being streamed but this specific Madrassah is not against filming and photography. If I don’t attend, it will cause family members to be upset. What would be the best solution to this dillemma?
ANSWER:
If you are certain that the Jalsa will be held in accordance with Shariah, and the laws of Shariah will not be violated in any way, then attending the Jalsa will be acceptable if you are not a senior who is accepted as a leader in society. If you are a senior Alim that is accepted as a leader of society, and you are followed in matters of Deen, then your presence would be an approval for their stance on videoing and appearing on YouTube etc. hence you should refrain from attending the Jalsa in this instance.
