QUESTION:
Is it permissible to participate in Arbor Day? Many Muslim schools are promoting this. I’m not sure if this is correct, but I have heard that Arbor day is linked to the Jews, where they plant trees to increase the amount of Gharqad trees which are mentioned in a Hadith.
ANSWER:
It is recorded on the internet that Arbor Day is a special day observed all around the world to increase awareness about trees and the vital role they have on our climate. Based on this explanation, there is no harm in participating in Arbor Day with the proviso that no Haraam is perpetrated such as intermingling, music, partying, etc. It is just a matter of planting trees by males and creating an awareness amongst the masses. We have no information in regard to the day being linked to Jews.
