Question:-

A person passed away. Can we have a Yaseen Khatm and Dua for him in the Masjid?

Can we have a Yaseen Khatm and Dua for him at his residence or at anyone else’s residence?

Answer:-

It is totally permissible for one to recite Quraan Sharif, perform Nafl Salaah, discharge charity, etc. and pass over the rewards to the deceased. However, the practice of getting the community and family members together and making Khatm of the Quraan Sharif, or reciting Surah Yaseen for the deceased is not proven from the Quraan Sharif or Hadith Sharif. To enforce such a practice will be considered as innovation which is deviation. Yes, if individuals recite the Quraan Sharif, or selected Surahs of the Quraan Sharif, on their own and pass over the rewards to the Marhoomeen, then there is no problem in doing so. However, the practice of gathering people at the home of the deceased or the Masjid to recite Yaseen Sharif is not substantiated and should, therefore, be discarded.

A question was posed to Hadrat Mufti Mahmood Saheb Gangohi Rahimahullah that a person attended a Quraan Sharif Khatm at some distant place. If he doesn’t eat there, then he will return home hungry. Is there any concession for him to eat after the Khatm? Hadrat Mufti Saheb replied, “He should not eat there, and there is no need to attend. One may convey the rewards from his very home.” [Re:- Fataawa Mahmoodiyyah Pg.386 Vol.13]
