A Wazifa for all problems

In Roohul Ma’ani it is mentioned that a group of Sahaaba Radiallahu Anhum were sent out to wage war against the Romans. En route, one Sahaabi who was mounted upon a horse, fell from his horse and broke his femur. The group made Mashwera as to what should be done as he was unable to proceed further. They set some provisions around him and tied his horse to a nearby tree. They then proceeded on their journey. After they left him, a person from the unseen appeared and asked him about his condition. He explained that he was injured and his companions left him there with some provisions and his animal. The person told him to place his hand on his injury and recite:

حسي الله لا إله إلا هو عليه توكلت وهو رب العرش العظيم

“Allah Ta’ala is Sufficient for me. There is no diety except Him. Only upon Allah Ta’ala I put my trust and Allah Ta’ala is the Lord of the great ‘Arsh -throne.’

The Sahaabi read this a few times (the number is unspecified) and he stood up from the ground completely healed. He mounted his horse and caught up with his companions Radiallahu Anhum.

On this incident, Allamah Aaloosi Baghdadi Rahimahullah writes that, “This Ayah of the Quraan has been the Wazifa of this servant for many years. All Praise be to Allah Ta’ala for granting me the Taufeeq to make Amal (practice) on this.” He then supplicated: “I make Dua that Allah Ta’ala grant us the Taufeeq (ability) of doing good actions through the Barakah of this verse of the Quraan Sharif.”

This Ayah appears in Surah Taubah, verse 129. One should make a habit of reading this seven times in the morning and evening.

Maulana Jalaalud-Deen Rumi Rahimahullah

Hadrat Hakim Akhtar Sahib mentions Maulana Jalaalud-Deen Rumi Rahmatullahi Alaihi in various sections of his Kitaabs. Maulana Rumi Rahimahullah was filled with the love of Allah Ta’ala.

Another person who had great love for Allah Ta’ala was Hadrat Hakeem Sahib. Once, Hadrat was visiting Reunion. At the time of breakfast, Hadrat’s Khadim called Hadrat to eat. Hadrat ignored him and continued speaking. He called Hadrat again without success. When he returned for the third time, Hadrat reprimanded him saying, ‘I am speaking of the love of Allah Ta’ala whilst you are calling me to eat.’ Although we should not delay in eating when the food is served, the purpose of this incident is to highlight the depth of love the pious had for Allah Ta’ala that worldly needs were unimportant.

Sheikh Shams Tabrez Rahimahullah

Sheikh Shams Tabrez Rahimahullah was the Sheikh of Maulana Rumi Rahimahullah. Sheikh Shams Tabrez Rahimahullah would make Dua to Allah Ta’ala that he had reached old age and desired to transfer the burning love of Allah Ta’ala to someone. He was informed in a dream of Maulana Jalaalud-Deen Rumi who was in Qunya. He was informed to meet him at the rice market. Maulana Rumi was also in search of the love of Allah Ta’ala. He came to the rice market and sat on a raised platform where the wealthy businessmen would sit. When Maulana Rumi heard that there was someone at the rice market speaking of the love of Allah, he went to the market. The lovers of Allah only get enjoyment in speaking of His love. They derive no enjoyment in discussing matters of the world.

Meeting of the eyes

When their eyes met, the spark of the love of Allah Ta’ala was transferred into Maulana Rumi Rahmatullahi Alaihi. It is mentioned that the mercy of Allah Ta’ala descends when mentioning the pious, what to say when they are present. It is a different world altogether. Also, it is Mustahab to make Dua in the presence of the pious. One should regard all those present to be pious (including the Sheikh) and make Dua through them to become a pious person. The Ameer of the Majlis (the Sheikh) should regard all those present as pious and make Dua through their intermediary. Hajee Imdaadullah Saheb Rahimahullah would regard those that came to learn the love of Allah Ta’ala a means of his salvation.

Sheikh Shams Tabrez Rahimahullah was hidden

Nevertheless, Maulana Rumi approached Sheikh Shams Tabrez Rahimahullah and said to his Sheikh that he can see in his eyes that he is a great Wali of Allah who enjoys a very close connection to Allah Ta’ala. Sheikh Shams Tabrez replied that this was Maulana Rumi’s Husne Zan (good thoughts) and that in reality, he was nothing. These seniors said this with utmost sincerity as they genuinely thought nothing of themselves. Sheikh Shams Tabrez Rahimahullah would dress like the normal people, as he desired to be hidden. He was a Qalandar (a rank amongst the pious).

However, Allama Shaami Rahimahullah has written in Kitaabul Hazri Wal Ibaahah that a senior scholar should wear a long and wide Kurta, so that people will come to him and enquire the necessary Masaa’il of Deen. If he dresses like the general people, then who would benefit from him?

Praises of People a Cause of Pride

However, the praises of people should not get to our heads. Our Sheikh mentions how when people attribute titles to us or praise us, we accept their praises and think of ourselves in a like manner. Hadrat gives an example of a person who has a car and it is problematic. The owner decides to sell the car through an auctioneer. The job of the auctioneer is to excessively praise the vehicle in order to make the sale. When the auction started praising the car and the owner heard all the good about his car, he said to auctioneer that he’d rather keep his car. The auctioneer commented saying that you brought the car here as you are aware of all the faults, and yet you want to keep the car now. Likewise, our condition is such. Take your car and go!

Someone praises us just a little, and we forget the reality of ourselves. Our past life of sin and our current sinning is forgotten in a moment.

Going back to Maulana Rumi and Sheikh Tabrez, Maulana Rumi told Sheikh Tabrez that despite his refutation, he can see that he is a great Wali of Allah Ta’ala. Now, the both of them went into seclusion. It is said that when he would enter his room, sometimes days would pass with him in meditation and he would only exit the room to make his Fardh Salaah. Once the transfer of the love of Allah Ta’ala from Sheikh Tabrez into Maulana Rumi Rahmatullahi Alaih was complete, then Allah Ta’ala inspired Maulana Rumi to compile 28 500 poems in His love.

The system of Allah Ta’ala is such that when a person stays with a senior, then the senior transfers everything into him, who then goes out into the world and establishes the Majaalis and gatherings of the Zikr of Allah Ta’ala.

Demise of Maulana Rumi Rahimahullah

On the demise of Sheikh Tabrez, Maulana Rumi became depressed and restless without the company and advice of his Sheikh. When Maulana Rumi would take a walk, he would pass by a goldsmith. The sound of the goldsmith hitting at the gold with his hammer was enjoyable to Maulana Rumi. Being in a state of deep thinking, when Maulana Rumi would reach this shop, he would become overwhelmed with the love of Allah Ta’ala and go into a trance to the extent that he would fall unconscious. Through this, a relationship between Maulana Rumi and the goldsmith, Salaahudeen Zarqoobi, bloomed. Maulana Rumi would talk to him about the love of Allah Ta’ala. Salaahudeen Zarqoobi was so overcome with the love of Allah Ta’ala entering his heart that he gave his shop away in Sadaqah. He stayed in the company of Maulana Rumi for nine years, before he met his demise. After he passed away, yet again Maulana Rumi became restless that he had no one to speak to of the love of Allah Ta’ala.

Two ways of enjoying the love of Allah Ta’ala

From here we learn that there are two ways to enjoy the love of Allah Ta’ala. One is a connection in seclusion, where we are in solitude, performing Tahajjud, or Tilaawat of Quraan. And the second is openly talking about Allah Ta’ala or engaging in collective Zikr. Maulana Rumi Rahimahullah made Dua to Allah Ta’ala for a person that he could connect with outwardly. Allah Ta’ala sent him a person names Hadrat Husaamud-Deen whom Maulana Rumi would refer to as Diyaa-ud-Deen. Maulana Rumi developed a special bond with Hadrat Husaamud-Deen. Once while reciting poetry in the love of Allah Ta’ala, Hadrat Husaam-ud-Deen suggested that the poetry rendered in the love of Allah Ta’ala be compiled in book form.

Maulana Rumi accepted this proposal and when he would render the poetry, Hadrat Husaam-ud-Deen would write it down. In this way they completed five volumes of poetry.

Time to Refuel

On completion of five volumes, Maulana put a stop to it saying, “I can see sand coming into the water.” What this meant was, just like if you continuously draw water from a well, eventually you will hit the mud at the bottom and it will come up with the water you are trying to get, similarly the Sheikh also needs to refuel, hence he now needs some time.”

Another example Maulana Rumi gave was of a mother who is breastfeeding her child. She feeds and then stops for a while before the next feed. In that time, her milk supply is able to collect. But if she continuously breastfeeds, at some point the milk will run dry and blood will emerge. So, the point Maulana was making was, everything should be done in moderation. After some time passed, Allah Ta’ala inspired Maulana Rumi to start again.

Maulana Rumi called Hadrat Hussam-ud-Deen and instructed him to start with the sixth volume. Maulana Rumi had great love for Hadrat Husaam-ud-Deen. However, he told Hadrat that he would never take his name in a general sitting and praise him in order to protect him from the envy of others. They continued in this manner until they compiled 28 500 poems. When they reached the last poem and Maulana was halfway through it, Allah Ta’ala blocked him and he understood that this was the completion of the Mathnawi Sharif. Shortly thereafter, Maulana Rumi passed away. So large was the gathering for his Janaazah that, he passed away in the morning but only reached the Qabrastaan in the evening.

We learn that by being in the company of the pious, just one gaze can spark the love of Allah Ta’ala and to what heights it can take a person in both Dunya and Aakhirah. We are entering the Mubaarak days of Shabaan and Ramadhaan, where Duas are accepted. If we don’t ask for anything, but we asked for Allah Ta’ala, then we have asked for everything. May Allah Ta’ala bless us all Insha’Allah!
