Impermissibility of looking at photographs
QUESTION:-
Please provide the Dalaa’il (proof) from Nass (Quraan and Hadith) that it is Haraam to look at digital photography?
ANSWER:-
Ashraful Ahkaam states that looking at pictures to attain pleasure and joy is Haraam. Yes, if one’s gaze accidentally falls on the picture, then there is no harm in that. One person asked the following question, “What if one admires the art of the artist?” Hadrat Thanvi Rahimahullah replied, “What is the drawing of the artist? It is prohibited to look at some of the creations of the actual Creator (Allah Ta’ala), such as admiring beardless young boys and women. The jurists have understood this matter very well and stated that, if one looks at alcohol to attain pleasure, then it is Haraam as the principle is, that one becomes desirous by looking at good things.” Re:- Ashraful Aahkaam Pg. 231 (old print) / Pg. 303 (new print)
Furthermore, it is recorded in the Maaliki Madhab that it is not permitted to intentionally look at those pictures which one is not permitted to capture and keep in the home (referring to animate pictures). For example, there is a picture in a book or in the newspaper-the objective of the reader is to read the contents of the book or newspaper, but pictures are also included therein. There is no harm in this instance as the objective is not to look at the picture.
In conclusion, it is not permissible to intentionally look at pictures and thereby derive enjoyment.
