QUESTION:
We purchased equipment to the value of R 2 million in the year 2019. The supplier was paid in full price but we have not yet received delivery of the equipment. We are currently in a legal dispute with the supplier, wherein we are demanding that they either deliver the equipment or refund the monies paid. Please advise on the status of Zakaat and the amount paid to the supplier. Furthermore, is Zakaat payable on this amount? Do we calculate Zakaat on the previous years as well?
ANSWER:
In the queried scenario, Zakaat is not payable if the supplier delivers the equipment. Similarly, if the transaction is cancelled, there is no Zakaat for the past years.
