Jinn and Jadu

QUESTION:

1. Is there any basis to the claim that a person shouldn’t pour boiling water down a drain because Jinn live therein and could attack a person?

2. How would you know if you are afflicted with Sihr?

3. How would a person know if he/she is possessed by a Jinn?

ANSWER:

1. The believing Jinn generally live in the mountains and inhabited places, whilst the Mushrik Jinn live in the valleys and islands. Those living in the towns and villages generally do not inconvenience and bother people, whilst the ones living in the mountains bother people.

Allama Zamaqshari Rahimahullah states that many people of the villages stated that they seen tents in the jungles occupied with people, but these people then disappeared. It is apparent that these were Jinn.

According to some narrations the Jinn live in the roofs of Muslim homes and partake of meals with the inhabitants of the home. They protect them from the evil Jinn.

Ibrahim Nakhi’ee Rahimahullah states, “Don’t urinate in a hole as the Jinn reside in them.” The Jinn also live in the toilets (places of impurity) hence, we are required to recite the Dua of protection before entering the toilet. [Jinnaat Ke Haalaat Wa Ahkaam Pg. 50-52]

In conclusion, these are the places that have been mentioned in the Kitaabs. Although there is no explicit mention of them residing in drainpipes, it is possible that they reside in them as well.

2/3. These are matters that should be referred to an Aamil. However, one should ensure that one refers to a genuine Aamil that is righteous and lives in accordance to the Sunnah.
