QUESTION:
Is it permissible to listen to Maher Zain?
ANSWER:
Firstly, it is imperative to understand the purpose of listening to a Nazam or Naath in the praises of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Some of these objectives have been listed below:
- To kindle the love and recognition of Allah Ta’ala in one’s heart.
- To enhance the love of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam in the heart, and to follow his Mubarak Sunnats.
- The reciter endeavours to instil good qualities such as Taqwa etc. in the listener through his rendition.
The Nazms and Naaths rendered in our times are generally not understood by the listeners. Listeners choose to listen for entertainment purposes or for the melodious tune in which it is rendered. Hence, none of the above-mentioned objectives are achieved, making it a futile activity.
Secondly, majority of the Nazm and Naath recitals have musical sound effects, while others have a musical background which are Haraam.
According to our knowledge, Maher Zain’s Nazms have musical backgrounds which are impermissible, hence we advise abstention.
ALLAH TA’ALA ALONE IN HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS BEST!
