“Mess Night”
QUESTION:
There is an ongoing trend that I have noticed where, before the wedding day, a “mess night” is hosted. Is this permissible?
ANSWER:
From the outset, it should be borne in mind that Islam is a complete and perfect religion. Allah Ta’ala states in the Quraan Majeed:
“Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed My blessings upon you and I am pleased with Islam as your religion.”
Hadrat Umar Radiallahu Anhu used to say:
“We were a humiliated nation then Allah honoured us through Islam. If we seek honour in other than what Allah honoured us, then Allah will humiliate us”.
Hence, if we hold onto Deen, Allah Ta’ala will honour us; and if we discard the injunctions of Deen, we will be humiliated.
Considering the aforementioned extracts, “mess nights” and other such parties which are currently in vogue, do not have any place in our Deen. These are Kuffaar practices which entail a host of evils such as intermingling of sexes, wastage of money, music, and other Haraam actions. Furthermore, we have been commanded to refrain from emulating the ways and customs of the Kuffaar. Hence, one should completely abstain from such functions.
