QUESTION:
On which hand should one wear his watch?
ANSWER:
The watch will fall in the same category as the ring, which Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam wore mainly for stamping important letters that were sent to various governors. A wristwatch is also an essential item of use which is worn on the hand, and has an element of adornment in it.
Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik Radiallahu Anhu reports that Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam wore a silver ring on his right hand which had an Abyssinian stone in it, and he would keep its stone facing towards the palm. (Sahih Muslim:2094)
Sayyiduna Anas Radiallahu Anhu says, “The ring of Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam was on this, and he pointed towards the little finger of his left hand. (Sahih Muslim:2095)
Due to different narrations, it will be permissible to wear the ring on both hands, and the same ruling will be applicable for the, watch according to Fuqahaa. It is advisable to wear the watch on the right hand as it is a means of observing Salaah times etc. Anything which is good should be done with the right.
