Performing Nafl Salaah for the deceased

Question:-

Can one benefit a deceased person by performing two Rakaats Nafl Salaah on his/her behalf? What should the Niyyah for such a Salaah be if one is permitted to do so?

Answer:-

1. Yes, it will be permissible to perform Nafl Salaah and pass over the rewards to the deceased person. It is recorded in Dar-ul-Qutni that a Sahaabi asked Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam, “I would serve my parents whilst they were alive, how can I serve them after their demise?” Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam replied, “This is also regarded as serving your parents that, together with your Salaah you perform Salaah (Nafl) for them and together with your fast you keep fast (Nafl) for them.”

2. One should make the Niyyah of Nafl Salaah.
