Q1) When a baby is born prematurely, he/she is quite delicate to handle. Could the shaving of the hair be delayed until the baby grows bigger, or is the shaving of the hair confined to the seventh day?
A1) Shaving the child’s hair on the 7th day is Mustahab (preferable). It is also Mustahab to give silver equivalent to the weight of the child’s hair in charity on the seventh day.
When Hadrat Hasan Radiallahu Anhu was born, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam slaughtered a sheep on his behalf. He then instructed Hadrat Fatima Radiallahu Anha to shave his hair and discharge Sadaqah equivalent to the weight of the hair in silver. When she weighed his hair, it amounted to a Dirham, or part of a Dirham.
يستحب لمن ولد له ولد أن يسميه يوم أسبوعه ويحلق رأسه ويتصدق عند الأئمة الثلاثة بزنة شعره فضة أو ذهبا ثم يعق عند الحلق عقيقة إباحة على ما في الجامع المحبوبي، أو تطوعا على ما في شرح الطحاوي، وهي شاة تصلح للأضحية تذبح للذكر والأنثى سواء فرق لحمها نيئا أو طبخه بحموضة أو بدونها مع كسر عظمها أو لا واتخاذ دعوة أو لا، وبه قال مالك. وسنها الشافعي وأحمد سنة مؤكدة شاتان عن الغلام وشاة عن الجارية غرر الأفكار ملخصا، والله تعالى أعلم.( الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين 6/336)
عن علي بن أبي طالب قال: عق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن الحسن بشاة، وقال: يا فاطمة، احلقي رأسه، وتصدقي بزنة شعره فضة، قال: فوزنته فكان وزنه درهما أو بعض درهم (سنن الترمذي #1519)
The Fuqaha have stated that if a person misses out the procedure of Aqeeqah (slaughtering the animal, shaving the hair, etc.) on the 7th day, then it could be carried out on the 14th day, and if he misses it out on the 14th day, then it could be carried out on the 21st day.
عن سمرة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: الغلام مرتهن بعقيقته يذبح عنه يوم السابع، ويسمى، ويحلق رأسه حدثنا الحسن بن علي الخلال قال: حدثنا يزيد بن هارون قال: أخبرنا سعيد بن أبي عروبة، عن قتادة، عن الحسن، عن سمرة بن جندب، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نحوه.: هذا حديث حسن صحيح والعمل على هذا عند أهل العلم يستحبون أن يذبح عن الغلام العقيقة يوم السابع، فإن لم يتهيأ يوم السابع فيوم الرابع عشر، فإن لم يتهيأ عق عنه يوم حاد وعشرين (سنن الترمذي #1522)
Q2) In Venezuela, people generally keep double-barelled names. Is the name, ‘Hasan Muhammad’ acceptable, or should the name start with, ‘Muhammad’ and then, ‘Hasan’?
A2) To keep the name, ‘Hasan Muhammad’ is permissible. However, it will be better to name him, ‘Muhammad Hasan’.
