QUESTION:
Kindly advise on the permissibility of the ingredient ‘shellac’, when used in food items?
ANSWER:
Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug on tree trunks in the forests of India and Thailand. Branches covered in these tiny insects and the lac they secrete are harvested, dried, crushed and heated. It is processed and sold as dry flakes or dissolved in alcohol to make liquid shellac, which is used as a brush-on colorant, food glaze and wood finish. It is also used in food coatings, cosmetics, as a coating on tablets and varnishes.
In conclusion, the resin is secreted by an insect and also comprises of dead insects which is later cleansed and purified as far as possible. Further, it is dissolved in ethanol alcohol to produce liquid shellac. We have been prohibited from consuming insects due to it being regarded as filth, whilst the usage of alcohol is impermissible whether ethanol or other. Thus, shellac will not be permissible for consumption.
(الباب الثاني في بيان ما يؤكل من الحيوان وما لا يؤكل) الحيوان في الأصل نوعان نوع يعيش في البحر ونوع يعيش في البر، أما الذي يعيش في البحر فجميع ما في البحر من الحيوان يحرم أكله إلا السمك خاصة فإنه يحل أكله إلا ما طفا منه، وأما الذي يعيش في البر فأنواع ثلاثة: ما ليس له دم أصلا وما ليس له دم سائل وما له دم سائل، فما لا دم له مثل الجراد والزنبور والذباب والعنكبوت والخنفساء والعقرب والببغاء ونحوها لا يحل أكله إلا الجراد خاصة، وكذلك ما ليس له دم سائل مثل الحية والوزغ وسام أبرص وجميع الحشرات وهو أم الأرض من الفأر والجراد والقنافذ والضب واليربوع وابن عرس ونحوها ولا خلاف في حرمة هذه الأشياء إلا في الضب فإنه حلال عند الشافعي رحمه الله تعالى (الفتاوى الهندية 5/289)
