Spending on students on the day of Aashurah

QUESTION:-

I would like to make Sadaqah of a goat and prepare a meal for new Muslim students. Can my Niyyah for this Sadaqah be combined with a Niyyah for Hadiyyah on Aashurah?

ANSWER:-

The virtue of spending on the Day of Aashura pertains to one’s family, hence, one should spend on one’s immediate family to acquire the virtue recorded in the Hadith.  At the same time, there are numerous virtues recorded for spending on the needy in other Ahadith, hence you feeding the students on the day of Aashurah is indeed a meritorious act for which you will be rewarded Insha’Allah. The Quraan Sharif states, “Allah Ta’ala decreases interest and increases charity” thus, your spending on the underprivileged students will also be a means of increase in your sustenance Insha’Allah. This will be considered as Sadaqah.
