Standing Up For Salaami
QUESTION:
During family gatherings, there is the practice of gathering everyone to stand and then someone calls out, ‘Ya Nabi Salaam Alayka’. While I understand that this practice is incorrect, I wanted to know if a person can stand up to avoid causing offense to the family members, considering that they don’t attach a belief to this practice?
ANSWER:
The custom of offering Salaam in the manner described in the query (famously known as Salaami), is categorized as a Bid’ah (innovation).
With regards to innovations, Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam states:
Hadrat Aisha Radiallahu Anha narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Whoever innovates a new practice in our Deen (which is not part of it), then it will be rejected.” [Muslim]
On one occasion, a group of people had gathered and were loudly reciting Durood upon Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. After seeing this, the illustrious Sahaabi, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ood Radiallahu Anhu had passed the verdict of such an act being a Bid’ah (innovation) and classified such people as innovators.
Furthermore, the Fuqahaa have written that one should not use the words “Ya Rasulallah” or “Ya Nabi” if one is not at the Rawdah Mubaarak, as it creates the impression or misunderstanding that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is omnipresent, whereas this is a quality exclusive to Allah Ta’ala.
Hence, we strongly advise you not to stand up for Salaami when everyone else stands. Consider the following Mubaarak Hadith:
“A time will come upon people when the one who remains steadfast in his religion will be like one who is holding onto burning embers.”
Instead, when you do find a suitable time to explain to your husband, then indicate to him the wrongs associated with Salaami, perhaps by sharing this Fatwa with him.
