Taking pictures for marriage
Question:-
I disagree with taking photos. I am getting married soon. My family and the girl’s family, are acquainted with each other and they have seen the girl that I intend marrying. However, since its been some time since they saw the girl that I intend marrying, will it be permissible to request a picture and see how the girl looks, and vice versa, since we are living in separate states. Also, in doing so, we will be saving as it is quite expensive to travel.
Answer:-
As Muslims, we should remember that the laws of Shariah are always applicable to us. Severe warnings have been mentioned in the Hadith Sharif for taking photos and viewing photos. We understand that it is an occasion of marriage and both parties would like to view each other before confirming the proposal. However, just as it is Haraam to view the picture of a human being at other times, it is not permissible to view the picture of one on this occasion as well.
Since you intend marrying within the family, we assume that the girl you intend marrying is known to your family, and similarly, you are known to her family. The seniors can guide you both in this matter, and their choice of partners for their children or grandchildren is generally very good. However, if you want to be totally satisfied with your decision, then it will be worth travelling to her country of residence and taking a glance at her with the intention of marriage. We understand that it is quite expensive to travel, but you are doing so to be protected from the sin of photography, thus we are confident that Allah Ta’ala will grant you plenty of Barakah.
In conclusion, it will not be permissible to view the photo of the opposite gender, even though it may be for purposes of marriage.
