QUESTION:
What is the Islamic perspective on the “Genome Project”, and understanding the connection between the physical and non-physical aspects of humans?
ANSWER:
The objective of the ‘Genome Project’ was to decipher the chemical makeup of the entire human genetic code. Almost every cell in the body contains a complete copy of the genome. This genome contains all the information needed for a person to develop and grow. This also allows scientists to identify genes involved in both rare and common diseases.
There is absolutely no problem in studying and contemplating the human anatomy, with the proviso that the human body is not dissected and humiliated. The Quraan Sharif states, “And within your own selves (are Aayaat) as well. Do you not (ponder over these and) see? [Surah Dhaariyaat, Verse21]
It is recorded in Tafseer Ibn Abi Haatim under the above verse that, does one not see how urine and stool exits from the body, or does one not see how food enters the body and the form in which it leaves the body?
Tafseer Jalaalain states that within oneself (the human body) there are many signs from the beginning of one’s creation (starting from infancy and then from stage to stage until one’s end), and there are many signs in the strange way in which the human body has been formed. This indicates towards the great Qudrat of Allah Ta’ala. [Jamaalain Pg.152 Vol.6]
The above indicates that there is no issue studying the chemical make-up of the human genetic code, particularly if this will lead one to the recognition of Allah Ta’ala, or for medical purposes but on condition that the human body is not dissected or humiliated in any way. We are living in an era of sophisticated equipment and machinery which could assist in conducting and concluding these studies and research.
The Quraan Sharif and Kitaabs of Tafsir have indicated that the way the human body functions is truly amazing and leaves one astonished. It is unfortunate that many disbelievers lead and head these projects, yet are deprived of recognizing the Creator of the human body. We hope that the above explanation answers your query.
