Vanilla Essence

QUESTION:-

I recently discovered that Robertsons lists ethanol as an ingredient in their vanilla essence. The product is certified Halaal. Will it be permissible to consume this product?

ANSWER:-

Vanilla essence is manufactured by various companies. We advise that you purchase vanilla essence that is ethanol free. Although Robertsons use ethanol in the manufacturing of their product, it is possible that other manufacturers do not utilize ethanol in their vanilla essence. There is a company known as ‘Vanilla Man’ that manufactures alcohol-free vanilla essence. They have branches in Gauteng, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.  In conclusion, when ethanol-free products are available, one should refrain from purchasing products that contain ethanol.
