Zakaah While In Debt

Jun 2, 2026 | Zakaat

QUESTION:

I have a debt of 230 000 to pay on a house. My monthly payment is 7000 until the house is fully paid. I have 33 000 in savings, and 30 000 which I borrowed to someone. How will I calculate Zakaah on this?

ANSWER:

In principle, Zakaah becomes Waajib for a person when he or she becomes the owner of  net wealth which is equal or more than the Nisaab of Zakaah. This net wealth is calculated  by taking ones Gross Zakaatable Wealth that has been in one’s possession for a whole lunar year and deducting liabilities and debts from it. The Nisaab for Zakaah is 20 Mithqals (87.479 g) for gold and 200 Dirhams (612.35 g) for silver. In the case of long-term loans, only a year’s payment will be considered as debt.
