Zakaat on funds accrued from the sale of a house
Question:-
With regards to Zakaat – I sold my house last February. This house was my primary residence and not sold with the intention of business, but because we were relocating to Johannesburg. My intention is to purchase another house but have not yet found a suitable one. Is Zakaat due on the monies received from the sale of my house? I have no source of income as I am student of Deen, and I am currently living off the proceeds from the sale of the house.
Answer:-
We understand that you are a Baaligh, understanding male that possesses the Nisaab over and above your basic needs and necessities. If this is the case, then Zakaat will be due on the funds that you currently have in savings from the sale of your house. You shouldn’t fear decrease of wealth, as the wealth of a person increases by discharging his Zakaat.
