Question:-
My daughter is one year old . She received quite a bit of monetary gifts when she was born. To secure her wealth I purchased a Kruger coin. Am I liable to discharge Zakaat on her behalf or is she liable to discharge her own Zakaat when she reaches puberty. How does it work?
Answer:-
You purchased a kruger coin for your daughter with the funds that she received as gifts as an infant. This, in essence, means that the coin (which you purchased) actually belongs to your daughter who is now a year old.
Zakaat is not obligatory on a Na-baaligh child until the child reaches the age of puberty. If a child owns the Nisaab of Zakaat on reaching puberty, and thereafter maintains the Nisaab for an additional year, then Zakaat will be obligatory on such funds.
In conclusion, you are not liable to pay Zakaat on the kruger coin that you purchased for her, rather, on reaching puberty, she will be liable to pay Zakaat as explained above.
