Making Salaam at the time of Adhaan
Question:-
Is it correct to make Salaam to one that is calling the Adhaan, or responding to the Adhaan?
Answer:-
In Ashraful Ahkaam, Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Rahimahullah has written that one should not make Salaam on the following occasions:
- When someone is engaged in Ibaadat.
- When someone is involved in a sin.
- When someone is engaged in any human need such as eating, drinking etc.

A person who is calling out the Adhaan or responding to the Adhaan is engaged in Ibaadat, hence one should not make Salaam to such a person. If someone makes Salaam to him (whilst he is calling or responding to the Adhaan), then it is not necessary upon him to respond to the Salaam.
وحاصلها: أنه يأثم بالسلام على المشغولين بالخطبة أو الصلاة أو قراءة القرآن أو مذاكرة العلم أو الآذان أو الإقامة، وأنه لا يجب الرد في الأولين (الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 1/618)
قوله: لا يرد السلام لم أره في النهر، وإنما رأيته في البحر. وقال في المعراج: وفي التحفة: وينبغي للسامع أن لا يتكلم ولا يشتغل بشيء في حالة الأذان والإقامة ولا يرد السلام أيضا؛ لأن الكل يخل بالنظم. (الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 1/399)
