Sunnats Pertinent To Nikaah
Q1. What is the Sunnah method of a father handing his daughter over to her husband?
A1. The following Sunnah should be carried out by the father of the bride on the day of Nikaah:
وَدَخَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْبَيْتَ فَقَالَ لِفَاطِمَةَ: «إِيتِينِي بِمَاءٍ»، فَقَامَتْ إِلَى قَعْبٍ فِي الْبَيْتِ فَأَتَتْ فِيهِ بِمَاءٍ، فَأَخَذَهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَجَّ فِيهِ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَهَا: «تَقَدَّمِي»، فَتَقَدَّمَتْ فَنَضَحَ بَيْنَ ثَدْيَيْهَا وَعَلَى رَأْسِهَا، وَقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ»، ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَهَا: «أَدْبِرِي»، فَأَدْبَرَتْ، فَصَبَّ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهَا، وَقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ» ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِيتُونِي بِمَاءٍ»، قَالَ عَلِيٌّ: فَعَلِمْتُ الَّذِي يُرِيدُ، فَقُمْتُ، فَمَلَأْتُ الْقَعْبَ مَاءً، وَأَتَيْتُهُ بِهِ، فَأَخَذَهُ وَمَجَّ فِيهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِي: «تَقَدَّمْ» فَصَبَّ عَلَى رَأْسِي وَبَيْنَ ثَدْيَيَّ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُعِيذُهُ بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ»، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَدْبِرْ»، فَأَدْبَرْتُ، فَصَبَّهُ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيَّ، وَقَالَ: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُعِيذُهُ بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ»، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ: «ادْخُلْ بِأَهْلِكَ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالْبَرَكَةِ» (صحييح ابن حبان #6944)
Hadrat Anas ibn Malik Radiallahu Anhu reported that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam went to the house of Hadrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu and asked for water. Hadrat Faatimah Radiallahu Anha brought the water and Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam took a sip and then gargled it out into the bowl. Subsequently, he sprinkled the water on her head and chest and recited:
اَللّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيطَانِ الرَّجِيم
“O Allah! I seek your protection for her and her progeny from Shaytaan the accursed.”
Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam asked her to turn around and sprinkled water on her back and repeated the Dua. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam then asked for more water and repeated the same action on Hadrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu and recited the same Dua:
اَللّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُعِيذُهُ بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهُ مِنَ الشَّيطَانِ الرَّجِيم
“O Allah! I seek your protection for him and his progeny from Shaytan the accursed.”
Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam then said to Hadrat Ali Radiallahu Anhu, “You may now proceed with your wife in the name of Allah Ta’ala with the blessings of Allah Ta’ala.”
Q2. Are there any specific Duas or Surahs that a married couple should recite?
A2. The husband and wife should recite the following Dua before having relations:
بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا
عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، يَبْلُغُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «لَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا أَتَى أَهْلَهُ قَالَ بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا، فَقُضِيَ بَيْنَهُمَا وَلَدٌ لَمْ يَضُرُّهُ»
(صحييح البخار 191)
Q3. Is there any basis attached to the exchange of rings between a groom and bride?
A3. It is not compulsory, nor Sunnah, to give the boy a ring in Shari’ah. However, it is permissible for the wife to give the husband a ring, with the proviso it is made of silver and is not more than a Mithqaal (4.374g) in weight.
ثم التختم سنة لمن يحتاج إليه كالسلطان والقاضي ومن في معناهما ومن لا حاجة له إليه فتركه أفضل
والسنة أن يكون قدر مثقال فما دونه ويكره التختم بالحديد والصفر للرجال والنساء لأنه حلية أهل النار وقد نهى عنه(الاختيار لتعليل المختار4/159)
