Burgundy is a dark red-purplish colour. The colour burgundy takes its name from the Burgundy wine in France.
The Cambridge English Dictionary defines maroon as a dark reddish-purple colour, while its “American Dictionary” section defines maroon as dark brown-red. Lexico online dictionary defines maroon as a brownish-red.
From the above definition, it is evident that both burgundy and maroon are primarily considered as red even though the shades of the colour may be of different levels hence the different names. The ruling in regards to men wearing red (which includes maroon and burgundy) is as follows:
Males are prohibited from wearing clothing that is entirely red in colour, due to it having resemblance with women, or due to it having resemblance with the A’aajim (non-Muslims), or due to pride. However, if these reasons become non-existent and fall away then the abhorrence will also fall away.
وَوَجَدْنَا النَّهْيَ عَنْ لُبْسِهِ لِعِلَّةٍ قَامَتْ بِالْفَاعِلِ مِنْ تَشَبُّهٍ بِالنِّسَاءِ أَوْ بِالْأَعَاجِمِ او التكبر وبانتفاع العلة تزول الكراهة باخلاص النية لاظهار نعمة الله تعالٰي (شامي ص358 ج6)
However, as the above reasons are still existent in this day and age (to a great extent), wearing clothing that is purely red remains Makrooh for men. This is applicable to both maroon and burgundy coloured clothing as well. Yes, if there are some other colours (together with the red) on the garment, for example if there are black stripes running across the length and breadth of the red area of the garment, there would be leeway for wearing such a garment.
