Wives reminded not to cause inconvenience to their husband
QUESTION:
I came across a Hadith (to the effect) that when a wife argues with her husband, then the Hoors curse her saying that he is just a loan to her, and he will be returning to them. Please explain this narration as my limited understanding is leading me to feel dismayed at this thought, as we strive hard to care for our husband and families in countless ways.
ANSWER:
This is an authentic narration which has been reported in a number of books of Hadith:
عن معاذ بن جبل رضي الله عنه مرفوعاً لا تؤذي امرأةٌ زوجَها في الدنيا إلا قالت زوجته من الحُورِ العِينِ لا تُؤْذِيهِ قاتلك الله! فإنما هو عندك دَخِيلٌ يُوشِكُ أن يفارقَكِ إلينا (ابن ماجه # 2014)
Muadh bin Jabal Radiallahu Anhu reports from Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam, “No woman harms her husband in this world, except his wife from the Hoors of Jannah says, “Do not harm him, May Allah destroy you, He is but a guest with you who will soon leave you to join us.”
The narration in no way overlooks the efforts and sacrifices of the wife who takes care of her spouse and children and fulfills all her household chores. It simply serves as a reminder to the wife to refrain from arguing, disputing, and inconveniencing the husband.
Re:- Tuhfatul Alma’ee Vol.3 Pg.613
To harm any creation of Allah Ta’ala is impermissible. Hence, this Hadith indicates that one should not inconvenience the husband who is also a creation of Allah Ta’ala. Because spouses enjoy an informal relationship, it is possible that the wife forgets the position of the husband and inconveniences him at times, hence the narration serves as a reminder to her.
Furthermore, there are many Ahadith that indicate that an obedient wife will be entered directly into Jannah.
عن أم سلمة رضي الله عنها قالت: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : أيما امرأة ماتت وزوجها عنها راضٍ دخلت الجنة ( الترمذي (268 #
Umme Salamah Radiallahu Anha reports that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Any woman that passes away whilst her husband is pleased with her will enter Jannah.”
4163) عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا صَلَّتِ الْمَرْأَةُ خُمُسَهَا وَصَامَتْ شَهْرَهَا وَحَصَّنَتْ فَرْجَهَا وَأَطَاعَتْ بَعْلَهَا دَخَلَتْ مِنْ أَيِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ شَاءَتْ) صحيح ابن حبان #
Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “When a woman performs her five daily Salaah, fasts in the month of Ramadaan, guards her chastity and obeys her husband, then she will enter from whichever doors of Paradise she wishes.”
In conclusion, there are many such narrations which discuss the virtues of a righteous wife and the rewards promised for her. The services of a wife rendered to her husband and family is in no way overlooked, but acknowledged and appreciated in Shariah. However, to protect her, she is reminded not to inconvenience the husband and deprive herself of the bounties in store for her in the hereafter.
