Time to spend on one’s family on the day of Aashura to attain blessings throughout the year

Question:-

We have heard that, if a person spends on his family on the day of Aashurah, he will receive abundance of blessings throughout the year. Does this mean that he should spend on the 10th day of Muharram or does spending on the night preceding the 10th day also suffice, as the night precedes the day in Islam?

Answer:-

The narration of Baihaqi states:

من وسع على عياله يوم عاشورا وسع الله عليه السنة كلها (رواه البيهقي)

Who spends freely on his family on the day of Aashura then Allah Ta’ala will grant him abundance throughout the year.

Most of the commentators of Hadith are of the opinion that it refers to spending on one’s family on the 10th day of Muharram. However, there is a view recorded by Hadrat Maulana Khalil Ahmad Saheb Saharanpuri Rahimahullah in Bazlul Majhood which states that it refers to the night preceding the 10^th day as well. Hence, if a person spends on his family and feeds them on the eve of the 10^th, then based on this view, he too will receive the virtue mentioned in the Hadith for spending on one’s family.

وقال الزين بن المنير: الأكثر على ان عاشورا هو اليوم العاشر من شهر الله المحرم، وهو مقتضي الاشتقاق والتسمية، وقيل: هو اليوم التاسع، فعلي الأول فاليوم مضاف لليلته الماضية، وعلي الثاني هو مضاف لليلته الاتية (بذل المجهود في حل سنن ابي داود ج٨ ص٦٥٧)
