Marrying a Barelwi
QUESTION:
What are the concerns if a Hanafi (male) wants to marry a Sunni (Female)?
ANSWER:
The objective of Nikah is to acquire peace and tranquility in one’s life as mentioned in the following verse of the Quraan Majeed. Allah Ta’ala says,
وَمِنْ آيَاتِهِ أَنْ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا لِّتَسْكُنُوا إِلَيْهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيْنَكُم مَّوَدَّةً وَرَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ(الروم آ: 21)
And from among His Signs is that He created for you wives from among yourselves, so that you may find solace in her, and He has placed amongst you affection and mercy. Verily, in that are signs for people that will reflect.
Peace and happiness can easily be achieved when both spouses have Deen in their lives. Hence, the Hadith states,
عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ تُنْكَحُ الْمَرْأَةُ لِأَرْبَعٍ : لِمَالِهَا وَلِحَسَبِهَا ، وَلِجَمَالِهَا ، وَلِدِينِهَا ، فَاظْفَرْ بِذَاتِ الدِّينِ (مسلم 1466)
Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “A woman is married for four reasons, for her wealth, her family lineage, her beauty, and for her Deen. Succeed in marrying a woman who has Deen.
Now coming to your query, if a follower of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah intends marrying a Sunni or Barelwi, then this could lead to numerous complications. If the Barelwi person believes in Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam being omnipresent, and even expresses such a belief then such a person loses their Imaan. Marrying such a person is questionable in the first place.

If one does not hold beliefs of Kufr but engages in Bid’aat (innovations) such as celebrating the 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, or one commemorates 3 days, 10 days and 40 days after the demise of a person, or celebrates on the date of demise of certain pious individuals, then these could result in continuous disputes and serious tension between the spouses. The children born from such a union will be confused, since the father will be against such innovations whilst the mother will be in favour of them. These are just some of the innovations that the Barelwi sect is involved in.
In conclusion, we advise you to abstain from marrying a follower of the Barelwi sect. You should make Dua to Allah Ta’ala to bless you with a righteous partner who will be compatible to you in all matters and assist you in practicing upon the correct Deen according to the teachings of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah.
