Separating Children’s Beds

QUESTION:

Considering the following Hadith of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam, “Command your children to perform Salaah when they are seven years old, and discipline them for it when they are ten years old, and separate them in their beds,” please clarify whether the instruction to separate children in their beds applies only to siblings of the opposite gender, or whether it also includes two sisters or two brothers sharing a bed?

ANSWER:

The command will apply to separating the beds of brother and sister and of two brothers or two sisters.

قوله ( وفرقوا بينهم في المضاجع ) قال في الحظر والإباحة من الدر وإذا بلغ الصبي أو الصبية عشر سنين يجب التفريق بينهما وبين أخيه وأخته وأمه وأبيه في المضجع لقوله عليه السلام وفرقوا بينهم في المضاجع وهم أبناء عشر ولعل المراد التفريق بحيث لا يشملهما سائر واحد مع التجرد أما النوم بالمجاورة مع ستر كل عورته بسائر يخصه ولو كان الغطاء واحدا فلا مانع ويحرر (حاشية الطحطاوي على مراقي الفلاح ١١٦)
