QUESTION:
I would like to know if it is necessary to cover the Moorat which is printed on babies nappies? Would it fall under the category of images that prevent the angels from coming near to the child?
ANSWER:
The Kitaabs of Fiqh state that the following pictures will be acceptable:
- The picture of an animate object without a head.
- A picture that is printed on an area of humiliation such as under the feet or an area of sitting (such as a mat/couch, etc.)
- An extremely small picture, the limbs of which cannot be noticed if one is standing whilst the picture is on the ground.
Since the nappy is an item of impurity and humiliation, the minute drawing or picture of some animal on it, will be acceptable. Also, if the nappy is placed on the ground, the picture is not visible to the onlooker that is standing. However, if purchasing nappies without pictures of animate objects is possible, then one should rather opt for such nappies.
