Beautification Between Spouses

QUESTION:

Women are encouraged to beautify themselves within the confines of the home for the satisfaction of the husband. Please explain in which manner is she allowed to do so, and to what extent?

ANSWER:

The importance of a woman adorning herself for her husband cannot be overstated. Allah Ta’ala describes the maidens of paradise, known as ” wide-eyed virgins”, by saying:

“They will look like rubies and corals.”

(Surah Rahmaan Aayah No.58)

This indicates that adornment is a means of attracting the attention of one’s spouse. A woman who is desirous of a healthy marriage should endeavour to beautify herself for her husband. In this way, the husband will also be saved from casting lustful glances at other women. There is nothing contrary to modesty or piety in a woman beautifying herself for her husband. Rather, adorning oneself within the limits of Shari’ah can help preserve chastity and strengthen the bond between spouses. The Nabi of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam encouraged women to maintain and enhance their appearance. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrated that the Nabi of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam was asked regarding the best woman, to which he replied:

الَّتِي تَسُرُّهُ إِذَا نَظَرَ

“The one who pleases him (her husband) when he looks at her.”

A wife may, therefore, dress attractively for her husband in private, including wearing appealing clothing intended exclusively for him. If her intention is to strengthen the marriage and help both spouses remain chaste, then this is commendable, and she may be rewarded, Insha’Allah.

However, it should be kept in mind that one should cover the area between the navel and knees even when alone, except when there is a genuine need, such as bathing, changing one’s clothes, or marital relations.

Thus, beautification between husband and wife should take place privately, contributing to love, attraction, chastity and a healthy marriage.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الصُّورِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُطِيعُ بْنُ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنْ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ عِصْمَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، – رضى الله عنها – قَالَتْ أَوْمَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ وَرَاءِ سِتْرٍ بِيَدِهَا كِتَابٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَبَضَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَدَهُ فَقَالَ ‏”‏ مَا أَدْرِي أَيَدُ رَجُلٍ أَمْ يَدُ امْرَأَةٍ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَتْ بَلِ امْرَأَةٌ ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏”‏ لَوْ كُنْتِ امْرَأَةً لَغَيَّرْتِ أَظْفَارَكِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ يَعْنِي بِالْحِنَّاءِ ‏.‏

Sunan Abi Dawud 4166

أَخْبَرَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَجْلاَنَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قِيلَ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَىُّ النِّسَاءِ خَيْرٌ قَالَ ‏ “‏ الَّتِي تَسُرُّهُ إِذَا نَظَرَ وَتُطِيعُهُ إِذَا أَمَرَ وَلاَ تُخَالِفُهُ فِي نَفْسِهَا وَمَالِهَا بِمَا يَكْرَهُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏

Sunan an-Nasa’i 3231

ِ (قَوْلُهُ وَالرَّابِعُ سَتْرُ عَوْرَتِهِ) أَيْ وَلَوْ بِمَا لَا يَحِلُّ لُبْسُهُ كَثَوْبِ حَرِيرٍ وَإِنْ أَثِمَ بِلَا عُذْرٍ، كَالصَّلَاةِ فِي الْأَرْضِ الْمَغْصُوبَةِ، وَسَيَذْكُرُ شُرُوطَ السَّتْرِ وَالسَّاتِرِ (قَوْلُهُ وَوُجُوبُهُ عَامٌّ) أَيْ فِي الصَّلَاةِ وَخَارِجِهَا (قَوْلُهُ وَلَوْ فِي الْخَلْوَةِ) أَيْ إذَا كَانَ خَارِجَ الصَّلَاةِ يَجِبُ السَّتْرُ بِحَضْرَةِ النَّاسِ إجْمَاعًا وَفِي الْخَلْوَةِ عَلَى الصَّحِيحِ…….. قَالَ: وَفِي غَرِيبِ الرِّوَايَةِ يُرَخَّصُ لِلْمَرْأَةِ كَشْفُ الرَّأْسِ فِي مَنْزِلِهَا وَحْدَهَا فَأَوْلَى لَهَا لُبْسُ خِمَارٍ رَقِيقٍ يَصِفُ مَا تَحْتَهُ عِنْدَ مَحَارِمِهَا اهـ لَكِنْ هَذَا ظَاهِرٌ فِيمَا يَحِلُّ نَظَرُهُ لِلْمَحَارِمِ أَمَّا غَيْرُهُ كَبَطْنِهَا وَظَهْرِهَا هَلْ يَجِبُ سَتْرُهُ فِي الْخَلْوَةِ؟ مَحَلُّ نَظَرٍ، وَظَاهِرُ الْإِطْلَاقِ نَعَمْ فَتَأَمَّلْ (قَوْلُهُ عَلَى الصَّحِيحِ) لِأَنَّهُ تَعَالَى وَإِنْ كَانَ يَرَى الْمَسْتُورَ كَمَا يَرَى الْمَكْشُوفَ لَكِنَّهُ يَرَى الْمَكْشُوفَ تَارِكًا لِلْأَدَبِ وَالْمَسْتُورَ مُتَأَدِّبًا، وَهَذَا الْأَدَبُ وَاجِبُ مُرَاعَاتِهِ عِنْدَ الْقُدْرَةِ عَلَيْهِ.

عورتوں کے لیے مختصر قمیص پہننے کا حکم:
خلاصہ یہ ہے عورت اپنے گھر میں شوہر کے سامنے مختصر لباس پہن سکتی ہے، ہاں جب باہر نکلے تو پورے جسم کو چھپانا ضروری ہوگا ۔ تاہم مسلمان نیک خاتون کے لیے مناسب بلکہ واجب ہے کہ پوری شرم و حیا اور عفت و پاکدامنی کی زندگی گزارے اور کافرات، فاسقات کے ساتھ تشبہ سے اجتناب کرے ۔
