Becoming an Astrophysicist
Question:-
I would like to find out if it is permissible to become an astrophysicist?
Could Mufti Saheb please mention the reasoning as well.
Answer:-
We understand that an astrophysicist is one that studies the universe to help us understand the physical matter and processes in our own solar system and other galaxies. It involves studying large objects such as planets, as well as tiny particles. Now, if a person studies with the intention of recognizing the great creations of Allah and thereby attaining the closeness of Allah Ta’ala, then there is no harm in doing so. Similarly, if one studies with the intention of explaining the greatness of Allah Ta’ala to others, then it is encouraged. The Quraan Sharif discusses the movement of the sun and the moon in Surah Yaseen. Allah Ta’ala speaks of the heavens being created with such perfection in Surah Mulk. Similarly, various creations of Allah are discussed in various parts of the Quraan Sharif, which should take one to the recognition of Allah Ta’ala. In conclusion, we find no problem in studying the subject with the correct intention. However, we discourage both males and females from attending universities, due to the Fitnas prevalent therein such as, students getting involved in Haraam relationships with both Muslims and non-Muslims, adopting incorrect beliefs due to the influence of the deviated sects, becoming apostates, etc. Yes, if one is able to study from home, then there is no harm in doing so.
