Sunnah Qiraat in Salaah

Question:-

What are the Sunnah Surahs to be recited in each Salaah?

Answer:-

Fardh Salaah

In Fajr and Zuhr Salaah it is Sunnah to recite any Surah commencing from Surah Al-Hujuraat to Surah Al-Burooj. In the Asr and Esha Salaah it is Sunnah to recite any Surah from Surah Taariq to Surah Bayyinah, and in the Maghrib Salaah it is Sunnah to recite from Surah Bayyinah to Surah Naas.

(و) يسن (في الحضر) لإمام ومنفرد، ذكره الحلبي، والناس عنه غافلون (طوال المفصل) من الحجرات إلى آخر البروج (في الفجر والظهر، و) منها إلى آخر – لم يكن – (البينة: 1) (أوساطه في العصر والعشاء، و) باقيه (قصاره في المغرب) أي في كل ركعة سورة مما ذكر، ذكره الحلبي، (الد المختار ج1ص74 )

Witr Salaah

It is Sunnah to recite Surah A’laa in the first Rakaat, Surah Kaafiroon in the second Rakaat and Surah Ikhlaas in the third Rakaat. There are other narrations as well regarding the different Qiraats of Witr Salaah. However, the narration quoted above is commonly found in the various Kitaabs of Hadith.

أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ عَزْرَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبْزَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْوِتْرِ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى، وَفِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ بِقُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ، وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ بِقُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ، وَلَا يُسَلِّمُ إِلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ، وَيَقُولُ ـ يَعْنِي بَعْدَ التَّسْلِيمِ ـ: «سُبْحَانَ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوسِ»، ثَلَاثًا (النسائ)

Sayyidina Ali Radiallahu Anhu reports that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam would recite the following nine Surahs in Witr:

In the first Rakaat he would recite, Surah Takaathur (Surah 102), Surah Qadr (Surah 97) and Surah Zilzaal (Surah 99).

In the second Rakaat he would recite, Surah Asr (Surah 103), Surah Nasr (Surah 110) and Surah Kawthar (Surah 108).

In the third Rakaat, he would recite Surah Kafiroon (Surah 109), Surah Lahab (Surah 111) and Surah Ikhlaas (Surah 112).

حدَّثَنَا فَهْدٌ , قَالَ: ثنا أَبُو غَسَّانَ , قَالَ: ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ , عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُوتِرُ بِتِسْعِ سُوَرٍ مِنَ الْمُفَصَّلِ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُولَى أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ وَإِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ وَإِذَا زُلْزِلَتْ وَفِي الثَّانِيَةِ وَالْعَصْرِ وَإِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللهِ وَإِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ وَفِي الثَّالِثَةِ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ وَتَبَّتْ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ» وَرَوَى عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ (شرح معاني الاثار ج١ ص٢٩٠)

It is recorded in Umdatur Riaa’ya (the commentary of Sharhul Wiqaayah), that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam would recite Surah Zilzaal in the first Rakaat, Surah Kawthar in the second and Surah Ikhlaas in the third Rakaat. [Re:- Umdatur Riaayah, Page.200, Haashiyah no.3]    

Hadrat Aisha Radiallahu Anha reports that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam would also recite the following in the three Rakaats of Witr Salaah: Surah Ikhlaas, Surah Falaq and Surah Naas. This has also been reported as the habit of Hadrat Umar Radiallahu Anhu. [Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah Hadith no. 6946]

Eid and Jumah Salaah

In the Jumuah and Eid Salaah, it is Sunnah to recite Surah A’laa in the first Rakaat and Surah Ghaashi’a in the second Rakaat.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَإِسْحَاقُ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ جَرِيرٍ، قَالَ يَحْيَى: أَخْبَرَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْتَشِرِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ، مَوْلَى النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، قَالَ: «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ فِي الْعِيدَيْنِ، وَفِي الْجُمُعَةِ بِسَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى، وَهَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ»، قَالَ: «وَإِذَا اجْتَمَعَ الْعِيدُ وَالْجُمُعَةُ، فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ، يَقْرَأُ بِهِمَا أَيْضًا فِي الصَّلَاتَيْنِ(صحيح مسلم)

Sunnat Salaah

In the Sunnah of Fajr and Maghrib, it is Sunnah to recite Surah Kafiroon in the first Rakaat and Surah Ikhlaas in the second Rakaat.
