QUESTION:
I would like to know if there’s any specific virtue for breastfeeding for two full years.
ANSWER:
We could not locate any specific virtue for breastfeeding for the full 2 years. However, there is a narration recorded in Tafseer Raazi wherein Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said: “When a woman breast-feeds her child, she receives the reward of giving life to a soul with every suckling of the child.
أَتَتْ وَاحِدَةٌ مِنَ النِّسَاءِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّه صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَالَتْ: رَبُّ الرِّجَالِ وَالنِّسَاءِ وَاحِدٌ، وَأَنْتَ الرَّسُولُ إِلَيْنَا وَإِلَيْهِمْ، وَأَبُونَا آدَمُ وَأُمُّنَا حَوَّاءُ. فَمَا السَّبَبُ فِي أَنَّ اللَّه يَذْكُرُ الرِّجَالَ وَلَا يَذْكُرُنَا، فَنَزَلَتِ الْآيَةُ. فَقَالَتْ: وَقَدْ سَبَقَنَا الرِّجَالُ بِالْجِهَادِ فَمَا لَنَا؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِنَّ لِلْحَامِلِ مِنْكُنَّ أَجْرَ الصَّائِمِ الْقَائِمِ فَإِذَا ضَرَبَهَا الطَّلْقُ لَمْ يَدْرِ أَحَدٌ مَا لَهَا مِنَ الْأَجْرِ، فَإِذَا أَرْضَعَتْ كَانَ لَهَا بِكُلِّ مَصَّةٍ أَجْرُ إِحْيَاءِ نَفْسٍ» ( تفسير الرازي (10/66
