Casting lustful glances at women
Question:-
There is a Hadith which is misunderstood by some. They state that the first glance at a non-Mahram is permitted. Does it then make it Halaal for me to intentionally look at a female once?
Answer:-
It is recorded in the Hadith Sharif that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam told Ali Radiallahu Anhu, “Do not persue a glance with another glance, for verily the first is for you, and not the second.”
The first glance refers to an accidental or unintentional glance, but it is not permissible to repeat the glance with a second one. Jareer Radiallahu Anhu narrates that I asked Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam regarding a sudden glance. He replied, “Turn your gaze away.” This can be done by looking away in another direction.
Hadrat Hakim Akhtar Saheb Rahimahullah states that the first glance mentioned in the narration refers to an accidental glance that occurs in a place where females aren’t present, such as a Masjid. If suddenly, a female appears and his gaze unintentionally falls on her, then such a glance will be overlooked. However, if one is in a place that is frequented by females, such as the market place, then he is required to continuously keep his gaze lowered.
In conclusion, casting an intentional glance is not permitted at all, even though it may be the first glance. Yes, if one looks at the opposite gender unintentionally (as explained above), but turns his gaze away immediately, then such a glance is overlooked.
عن ابن بريدة عن أبيه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعلي بن أبي طالب رضي الله عنه لا تتبع النظرة النظرة فإن لك الأولى وليس لك الآخرة.
قال الشيخ النظرة الأولى إنما تكون له لا عليه إذا كانت فجأة من غير قصد أو تعمد وليس له أن يكرر النظر ثانية ولا له أن يتعمده بدءا كان أو عودا.
قال أبو داود: حدثنا محمد بن كثير، قال: حَدَّثنا سفيان، قال: حَدَّثنا يونس بن عبيد عن عمرو بن سعيد، عَن أبي زرعة عن جرير، قال سألت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن نظرة الفجأة فقال اصرف بصرك.
قال الشيخ ويروى اطرق بصرك حدثنا ابن الأعرابي، قال: حَدَّثنا علي بن عبد العزيز، قال: حَدَّثنا أبو نعيم حدثنا سفيان عن يونس بن عبيد عن عمر بن سعيد، عَن أبي زرعة عن جرير، قال سألت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عن نظرة الفجأة فقال اطرق بصرك.
قال الشيخ الأطراق أن يقبل ببصره إلى صدره والصرف أن يقبله إلى الشق الآخر أو الناحية الأخرى. )معالم السنن222 ج3)
