QUESTION:
Regarding fishing, there is a rule of catch and release. If at a certain dam owned by others ,this rule is enforced, and one catches and doesn’t release but takes it and “hides” it away, is it permissible and Halaal to consume this fish?
ANSWER:
Firstly, one should catch fish for consumption and not as a sport hence, one should not fish at a dam where the rule of ‘catch and release’ is enforced as this is a futile activity. Secondly, by catching and releasing, the fish is harmed for no reason which is regarded as Makrooh. If one is required to release the fish after catching it from the dam, then it will not be permissible to secretly take the fish away. If one does so, then consuming the fish will not be permissible.
