QUESTION:
Kindly clarify the status of covering one’s head while eating. If it is not a Sunnah, to what extent can it be enforced?
ANSWER:
The Kitabs of Fiqh state that there is no harm in eating with the head uncovered. Yes, if it is part of the Madrasah rules to eat with the head covered, or it is enforced by the Sheikh (in the Khanqah), then there is no problem as this is part of one’s Tarbiyah. Similarly, the seniors should cover their head while eating, as this will serve as example to the juniors.
ولا بأس بالأكل متكئا أو مكشوف الرأس في المختار (رد المحتار ص340 ج6)
