Question:-
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported : Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam prohibited drinking directly out of the mouth of a water-skin (container where water is kept). [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Does this mean that we should not drink out of our bottles ?
Answer:-
The Hadith in question is recorded in Bukhari Sharif:
عن ابي هريرة رضي الله عنه نهي النبي صلي الله عليه وسلم ان يشرب من في السقاء (#٥٦٢٨)
Hadrat Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu narrates that Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam prohibited from drinking directly out of the mouth of a water skin.
Drinking directly from the mouth of the water skin is prohibited. The commentators of Hadith explain that the wisdom behind the prohibition is that a person does not know what is inside the container, so there is a possibility of him being harmed. Mufti Saeed Ahmed Paalanpuri Rahimahullah provides some reasons behind the prohibition:
- The water emerges from the water skin with force which can hurt the throat and stomach.
- One does not know what is inside the container.
- There is a possibility of harmful insects being in the container.
- If every person drinks directly from the container, the mouth of the container will give off a bad stench. [Re:- Tuhfatul Qari Vol:10 Pg:469]
Thus, the Fuqaha have written that it is Makrooh to directly drink from those containers/bottles whose inside condition is unknown, as it is possible that there is something harmful inside. However, if one able to see the contents (of the bottle), then it will be permissible to drink from such a container/bottle. Notwithstanding the above, if there is a fear of the container slipping and falling whilst drinking, then one should refrain from drinking directly from such a container/bottle as well.
