Dua For Gazing At The Moon

QUESTION:

When reciting the Dua for when one’s gaze falls on the moon, a student asked if it is bad to look at the moon, and is that why we seek refuge from its evil?

ANSWER:

You are referring to the Dua of Tirmidhi (#3366), narrated by Hadrat Aisha Radiallahu Anha, when Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam looked at the moon and said:

يَا عَائِشَةُ اسْتَعِيذِي بِاللہِ مِنْ شَرِّ هَذَا، فَإِنَّ هَذَا الْغَاسِقُ إِذَا وَقَبَ

“O Aisha! Seek refuge in Allah from the evil of this, for this is darkening when it enters/overspreads.”

The commentators of Hadith explain why Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said this. The key phrase is الْغَاسِقُ إِذَا وَقَبَ; which is left out in the Dua and it is also found in Surah al-Falaq 113:3:

وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
“And from the evil of the darkness when it settles.”

Hazrat Moulana Rasheed Ahmed Ganghoi explains that Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam was seeking Allah Ta’ala’s protection from the harm associated with the darkness of night, rather than implying that the moon itself is evil

. قوله: هذا هو الغاسق ليس للحصر، بل المراد أن هذا هو الذي ذكر في الآية، والمراد بالإشارة إلى القمر هو ما بعد غروبه وانتشار الظلمة

اختلفوا في تفسير الآية على أقوال عديدة بلغها الرازي في التفسير الكبير إلى خمسة: منها أن الغاسق إذا وقب هو القمر، قال ابن قتيبة: الغاسق القمر ، سمي به لأنه يكسف فيغسق، أي: يذهب ضوؤه ويسود، ووقوبه دخوله في ذلك الاسوداد، ثم ذكر حديث الباب، ثم قال: وقال ابن قتيبة: ومعنى قوله: تعوذي بالله من شره إذا وقب، أي: إذا دخل في الكسوف.

وقال الخازن: معنى قوله: «وقب» دخل في الخسوف، أو أخذ في الغيوبة. وقيل: إذا وقب دخل في المحاق، وهو آخر الشهر، وذلك الوقت يتم السحر المورث للتمريض، وهو المناسب بسبب النزول، ورجّحه الرازي في التفسير، وقال: ولذلك السحرة إنما يشتغلون بالسحر المورث للتمريض في هذا الوقت، وهذا مناسب لسبب نزول السورة، فإنها نزلت لأجل أنهم سحروا النبي ﷺ لأجل التمريض، انتهى.
