Duration of Salaah

QUESTION:

Is there time limit within in which each Fardh Salaah should be performed? For example, should the Fajr Salaah in Jamaat be restricted to 10 minutes.

ANSWER:

There is no fixed duration in minutes for each Salaah. However, guidelines have been given as to how long the Qiraat (recitation) should be for each Salaah. With regards to Fajr and Zuhr Salaah, the recitation should be somewhere from Surah Al-Hujurat (49) to Surah Al-Buruuj (85). For Asr and Isha Salaah, the recitation should be somewhere from Surah Al-Buruuj (85) to Surah Al-Bayyinah (98). For Maghrib Salaah, the recitation should be somewhere from Surah Al-Bayyinah (98) to Surah An-Naas (114).

ثم إن دخول الوقت شرط لصحة أداء الصلاة لا وجوده جميمه وإلا يلزم أداء الصلاة بعد الوقت, والأصل في اشتراط الوقت قوله تعلى: إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَـٰبًا مَّوْقُوتًا ونحوها من الآيات على ما تقدم الكلام عليه في أوائل الكتاب.

وَاسْتَحْسَنُوا فِي الْحَضَرِ طِوَالَ الْمُفَصَّلِ فِي الْفَجْرِ وَالظُّهْرِ وَأَوْسَاطَهُ فِي الْعَصْرِ وَالْعِشَاءِ وَقِصَارَهُ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ. كَذَا فِي الْوِقَايَةِ. وَطِوَالُ الْمُفَصَّلِ مِنْ الْحُجُرَاتِ إلَى الْبُرُوجِ وَالْأَوْسَاطُ مِنْ سُورَةِ الْبُرُوجِ إلَى لَمْ يَكُنْ وَالْقِصَارُ مِنْ سُورَةِ لَمْ يَكُنْ إلَى الْآخِرِ. هَكَذَا فِي الْمُحِيطِ وَالْوِقَايَةِ وَمُنْيَةِ الْمُصَلِّي.
