QUESTION:

Please advise if it is acceptable to follow Omar Suleiman?

ANSWER:

Consider the following statement of Muhammad bin Sireen (Rahimahullah):

إن هذا العلم دين، فانظروا عمن تأخذون دينكم.(صحيح مسلم 1/14)

“Indeed, knowledge is an integral part of Deen, therefore be careful whom you take your religious guidance from.”

We understand from the above statement that when acquiring the knowledge of Deen, one must source it from reliable, upright and religious Ulama who are firmly embedded in knowledge and practice.

When we study the life and practices of Omar Suleiman, then we find him contrary to the explanation mentioned above. He openly commits certain sins which are completely against Shariah such as:

1. His beard does not conform to Shari’ee standards.

2. He freely intermingles with women.

3. He participates in interfaith prayers and activities.

How can one acquire knowledge of Deen from someone who is not committed to Deen and openly commits sins?! Fuqaha have clearly mentioned that a person who does not have a Shari’ee beard is a Faasiq (open sinner).

(قوله وفاسق) من الفسق: وهو الخروج عن الاستقامة، ولعل المراد به من يرتكب الكبائر كشارب الخمر، والزاني وآكل الربا ونحو ذلك، كذا في البرجندي إسماعيل.

وفي المعراج قال أصحابنا: لا ينبغي أن يقتدي بالفاسق إلا في الجمعة لأنه في غيرها يجد إماما غيره. اهـ. قال في الفتح وعليه فيكره في الجمعة إذا تعددت إقامتها في المصر على قول محمد المفتى به لأنه بسبيل إلى التحول (الدر المختار و حاشية ابن عابدين 1/560)

ولذا يحرم للرجل قطع لحيته والمعنى المؤثر التشبه بالرجال اهـ وقال العلائي في كتاب الصوم قبيل فصل العوارض إن الأخذ من اللحية وهي دون القبضة كما يفعله بعض المغاربة ومخنثة الرجال لم يبحه أحد وأخذ كلها فعل يهود والهنود ومجوس الأعاجم اهـ فحيث أدمن على فعل هذا المحرم يفسق وإن لم يكن ممن يستخفونه ولا يعدونه قادحا للعدالة والمروءة فكلام المؤلف غير محرر فتدبر.(العقود الدرية في تنقيح الفتاوى الحامدية 1/329)

Based on the above, it is quite evident that it is not permissible to follow him.

Furthermore, Alhamdulillah Allah Ta’ala has blessed our country with many senior, upright and pious Ulama who have sacrificed their entire life for the preservation and propagation of Deen, hence one should hold firmly on to them.

ALLAH TA’ALA ALONE IN HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS BEST!
