Emojis

QUESTION:

Emojis help in conveying emotions through text messages, and a friend of mine becomes annoyed when I don’t communicate using emojis. Would this make it permissible to use?

ANSWER:

An emoji does not fall in the category of an animate object; hence it cannot be categorized as Haraam. However, since it mimics the face, it is best not to use them as one may later adopt a lax attitude with regards to photography. Secondly, these emojis are used to initiate friendly conversations with the opposite gender which later leads to various forms of sin. Hence, we strongly discourage the use of emojis. If you have already stopped using emojis, then you should continue doing so in the future as well, even though your friend may get annoyed. In conclusion, it is best that you express yourself in writing or telephonically (when communicating), which is in accordance with Shariah.
