Engaging in conversation after Esha

Question:-

Is it a sin to sit around friends and talk after Esha?

Answer:-

It is recorded in the Hadith, “There is no chatting (at night) after Esha.” By staying awake and engaging in conversation into the late hours of the night, one will experience difficulty in waking up for the Fajr Salaah. Therefore, engaging in futile conversation after the Esha Salaah is categorised as ‘Makrooh’.

وذكر الفقيه أبو الليث رحمه الله في كتاب «البستان» أن السمر بعد العشاء مكروه عند البعض، قال: وهو الكلام لأجل المؤانسة، وفي شرح كتاب الصلاة لبعض المشايخ ذكر الكراهة ولم ينسبه إلى البعض، وروي عن رسول الله عليه السلام أنه قال: «لا سمر بعد العشاء» والله أعلم. (المحيط البرهاني ص278 ج1)
