Question:-
A man divorced his wife who is pregnant with their child. To what extent is the father responsible to maintain the child?
Answer:-
He is required to pay all the expenses of the expected child, such as food, clothing, accommodation, medical bills, education, etc. He is required to maintain a son until he reaches maturity, and a daughter until marriage.
( وَتَجِبُ ) النَّفَقَةُ بِأَنْوَاعِهَا عَلَى الْحُرِّ ( لِطِفْلِهِ ) يَعُمُّ الْأُنْثَى وَالْجَمْعَ الْفَقِيرِ الْحُرِّ—-اي ان لم يبلغ حد الكسب (الدر المختار ص336ج5)
وَنَفَقَةُ الْإِنَاثِ وَاجِبَةٌ مُطْلَقًا على الْآبَاءِ ما لم يَتَزَوَّجْنَ إذَا لم يَكُنْ لَهُنَّ مَالٌ كَذَا في الْخُلَاصَةِ (الفتاوي الهندية ص563 ج1)
