QUESTION:

1. If a person has interest money in their bank account and wants to give it in Sadaaqah without the intention of reward, can they take from the money which they have in cash and give it away, or does the money need to be withdrawn from the bank and then distributed?

2. Can a person use the first 2 Ayats of Surah Muddatthir to claim that الله تعالى is making the Tashkeel of نبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ? And, can the 3rd and 4th Ayats of the same Surah be used to show that people should have good character?

ANSWER:

1. The interest from the bank must be withdrawn and given out in charity without the intention of reward.

2. These are all commands of Allah Ta’ala and not Tashkeel. The fourth verse has nothing to do with character. The fourth verse refers to wearing clothing that are free of Napaaki. Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu states it refers to cleansing the heart from sin and disobedience. [Safwatut Tafaseer Pg.450 Vol.3] The fifth verse refers to discarding idol worship. Some commentators mention that it is refers to imbibing excellent character. It is as though it is being said, “Discard harshness and rudeness, foolishness and all types of evil and do not adopt the character of the Mushrikeen.” [Safwatut Tafaseer Pg.450 Vol.3]
