Gathering people to recite Surah Yaseen

Question:-

What is the ruling of Shariah with regards to organizing a Yaseen-Sharif Khatam for the deceased in the Masjid, after a particular Salaah where everyone sits and recites Surah Yaseen and thereafter, Dua is made by the Imaam?

Answer:

Hafiz Suyuti Rahimahullah has written in Sharhus Sudoor that, according to majority of the A’immah (that is, Imaam Abu Hanifa Rahimahullah, Imaam Shafi’ee Rahimahullah and Imaam Ahmad Rahimahullah), the reward of Tilawaat of Quraan Sharif reaches the deceased hence, there is no problem in reciting Quraan Sharif and thereafter passing the rewards over to the deceased.

However, if people recite Quraan Sharif in a gathering and pass over the rewards to the deceased, then the following should be kept in mind:

  1. Those participating in the recitation should do so purely for the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala. They shouldn’t recite to show the family of the deceased. If any person doesn’t attend, then he shouldn’t be looked down upon. It is better to recite Quraan Sharif individually rather than reciting in a group or gathering, as there is more sincerity in individual recitation.

  2. Secondly, those participating in the recitation should ensure that the Quraan Sharif is recited correctly.

  3. The reciters should not be remunerated, otherwise they will be deprived of the reward of recitation. If they are deprived of reward, then how will they transfer reward over to the deceased? Our jurists have written that to invite others for group Khatams, or to gather the pious and Qurrah particularly for completion of Quraan, or to recite Surah An’aam or Surah Ikhlaas (which includes Surah Yaseen), is Makrooh.

In many instances, Hifz students are invited to recite the entire Quraan Sharif for the deceased. These students are either remunerated or given a Dawat after the recitation. Similarly, family members are sometimes gathered (on the demise of a family member) to recite for the deceased, and after completion of the Quraan Sharif, food is served to all the participants. If any family member is unable to attend, then he is looked down upon which is incorrect. We are, therefore, not in favour of such gatherings but we give preference to individual recitation as mentioned above, in which there is more Ikhlaas. The individual reciter may recite any portion of the Quraan Sharif and pass the rewards over to the deceased.
