Fasting on the 10th of Muharram

Question:-

What is the status of fasting on the 10th of Muharram?

Answer:-

It is recorded in Maraaqil Falaah that it is Sunnah to fast on the 10th of Muharram. When Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam was asked with regard to the fast of the 10th of Muharram, he said, “It is a means of expiation of the past year’s sins.” However, Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam also stated, “If I remain alive until the next year, then I will fast on the 9th as well.” Hence, the Fuqaha have written that fasting only on the 10th of Muharram is Makrooh. [Maraaqil Falaah Ma’aa Haashiyatut Tahtawi Pg. 639 / Shaami Pg.375 Vol.2] One should, therefore, fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram or, the 10th and 11th of Muharram. It is recorded in another narration, “Fast on the day of Aashura and contradict the Jews, fast a day before it or a day after it.”  [Re:- Mirqaat Pg.288]
