Flying a kite

Question:-

I would like to know if it’s permissible to fly a kite?

Answer:-

The jurists have written that it is not permissible to fly a kite, as it consists of various forms of wrongdoing. We have listed some of these wrongs below:

1. Competing with each other in flying a kite is considered as competing and being proud in disobedience, which is Haraam. In fact, there is a danger of Kufr.

2. To waste money in a futile exercise is referred to as ‘Tabzeer’, which is Haraam. Those involved in such wastage are referred to as the brothers of Shaytaan.

3. Whilst flying a kite, one moves backwards and could trip and fall. This is putting oneself into danger. Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam prohibited us from sleeping on such a roof which doesn’t have some means of protection.

4. If one stands on the roof and flies a kite, then he will most likely look into the homes of other people. Hence, the laws of Purdah will be violated.

5. A person will become negligent of Jamaat, or Salaah itself, due to being involved in flying kites. The reason for wine and gambling being prohibited (mentioned in the Quraan Sharif) is that it prevents one from the Zikr of Allah and Salaah.

6. Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam referred to those that run behind birds as Shaytaan. One that is engrossed in flying birds becomes negligent of his (Deeni) matters. The same reasoning is found in flying kites hence, the same warning is applicable.
