QUESTION:
Can a grandparent give Zakaat from her personal funds to her grandson who is 22 years old and studying the Aalim course, for his monthly personal use, due to his father being unemployed?
ANSWER:
The Fuqaha have written that Zakaat may not be given to one’s descendants, that is, one’s children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, etc. Similarly, Zakaat cannot be given to one’s ascendants or to one’s spouse. In conclusion, it will not be permissible for the grandmother to give her Zakaat to her grandson. [Re: Fataawa Uthmaaniyyah Vol: 4 Pg:50] However, there is no harm in assisting him with Lillah funds.
