Hair Treatments For Males
Q1. Is it permissible for a boy to perm his hair?
A1. A boy should not perm (permanent wave) his hair as this is the way of the Kuffaar and we have been commanded to refrain from imitating their ways. Also, if a young boy (without a beard) perms his hair, it may give him some feminine features which may be a form of attraction.
Q2. Are males allowed to dye their hair?
A2. Regarding dyeing the hair, if the dye does not contain any impermissible ingredients and at the same time it is permeable (meaning it is of such a nature that water penetrates through it), even then one should refrain from dyeing the hair due to the reasons listed below:
2.1 In the Hadith we learn that white hair is dyed, whilst dyeing black hair is not proven. This simply means that young people whose hair hasn’t yet turned white should refrain from dyeing their hair.
2.2. Most young people who dye their hair do so in emulation of the west as it is fashionable in keeping up with trends.
2.3 By dyeing one’s hair (particularly young people with black hair), one squanders his/her wealth and exceeds the bounds in beautifying themselves.
2.4. In our times, the trend of dyeing the hair in different colours resembles the ways of the Kuffaar and transgressors. From a medical point of view, experts have written that chemical-based dyes utilized nowadays, harm a person in the sense that it causes the roots of the hair to weaken and ultimately the hair starts falling away.

Q3. Which colours are permissible to use to dye one’s hair?
A3. Both males and females are prohibited from using pure black dye. However, if black dye is mixed with another colour which results in a third colour being created (other than black), then using such a dye will be permissible. In other words, when applied to the hair or beard, a third colour other than black is witnessed or seen. However, if it results in the black shade becoming darker or lighter, then usage of such a black dye will not be permitted. For example, if you mix black and brown you may get a slightly lighter colour than black, but not much. In this instance, using the mixed dye will not be permitted as the result of the mix is still black.

اختضب لأجل التزين للنساء والجواري جاز في الأصح ويكره بالسواد
قوله جاز في الأصح وهو مروي عن أبي يوسف فقد قال: يعجبني أن تتزين لي امرأتي كما يعجبها أن أتزين لها والأصح أنه لا بأس به في الحرب وغيره واختلفت الرواية في أن النبي – صلى الله عليه وسلم – فعله في عمره والأصح لا وفصل في المحيط بين الخضاب بالسواد قال عامة المشايخ: إنه مكروه وبعضهم جوزه مروي عن أبي يوسف، أما بالحمرة فهو سنة الرجال وسيما المسلمين اهـ منح ملخصا وفي شرح المشارق للأكمل والمختار أنه – صلى الله عليه وسلم – خضب في وقت، وتركه في معظم الأوقات، ومذهبنا أن الصبغ بالحناء والوسمة حسن كما في الخانية قال النووي: ومذهبنا استحباب خضاب الشيب للرجل والمرأة بصفرة أو حمرة وتحريم خضابه بالسواد على الأصح لقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام «غيروا هذا الشيب واجتنبوا السواد» اهـ قال الحموي وهذا في حق غير الغزاة ولا يحرم في حقهما للإرهاب ولعله محمل من فعل ذلك من الصحابة (الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين 6/ 756)
