QUESTION:
Is it permissible to have a picture of Masjid-ul-Haram displayed in a Masjid?
ANSWER:
Generally, pictures and frames are put up on the front wall of the Masjid (in the direction of the Qiblah), so that it is visible to all the Musallis. We advise abstention from hanging a painting or picture of the Haram in the Masjid (in the direction of the Qiblah) as doing so is regarded as Makrooh. However, there is no harm in hanging it at the rear of the Masjid.
(وَلَا بَأْسَ بِنَقْشِهِ خَلَا مِحْرَابَهُ) فَإِنَّهُ يُكْرَهُ لِأَنَّهُ يُلْهِي الْمُصَلِّي. وَيُكْرَه التَّكَلُّفُ بِدَقَائِقِ النُّقُوشِ وَنَحْوِهَا خُصُوصًا فِي جِدَارِ الْقِبْلَةِ قَالَهُ الْحَلَبِيُّ. وَفِي حَظْرِ الْمُجْتَبَى: وَقِيلَ يُكْرَهُ فِي الْمِحْرَابِ دُونَ السَّقْفِ وَالْمُؤَخَّرِ انْتَهَى. وَظَاهِرُهُ أَنَّ الْمُرَادَ بِالْمِحْرَابِ جِدَارُ الْقِبْلَةِ فَلْيُحْفَظْ (رد المحتار ص658 ج1)
